South Coast Harriers Dominate SoCal Championships

The Southern California Cross Country Championships were an all-South Coast Conference party as Mt. San Antonio College won the men's title, led by individual champion Salvador Capetillo, and Los Angeles Harbor College captured the women's regional title, led by race champ Brenda Rosales Coria. The region meet was held at Don Knabe Community Regional Park in Cerritos on November 2.

The champions were identical at the South Coast Conference Championships held a week earlier, ironically on the same Cerritos course. Rosales Coria ran the 5-kilometer course in a time of 17:15.1. Five South Coast runners from Harbor and Mt. SAC made up the top 10 finishers. The Harbor women won its title ahead of second place Mt. San Antonio. Chaffey finished eighth and El Camino 11th out of 26 scoring teams.

On the men's side, Mt. SAC won as Capetillo ran the fastest time of anyone on the 4-mile course at 19:01.3. Capetillo ran an amazing 47 seconds faster than his South Coast finals run. Fellow SCC rival El Camino took second overall behind second-place individual finisher Carson Bix, who was 40 seconds behind Capetillo's blistering pace. Eight of the top 15 men's runners were collectively representing the SCC from Mt. SAC, ECC, and LA Harbor. Harbor placed ninth as a team and Cerritos was 10th.   

The South Coast teams will shoot for the hardware at the CCCAA State Championships to be held November 17 at Woodward Park in Fresno. Mt. SAC is the defending state champions in both genders. Last year, Manny Fernandez of the Mounties won the individual first-place medal. Rosales Coria was the state runner-up on the women's side.
