CCCAA Board Approves Proposal To Go Forward With Sports In 2020-2021

The CCCAA Board of Directors added hope for all California Community College sports teams, including those participating in the South Coast Conference, by unanimously approving a plan to allow the return of athletics competition in the 2020-2021 sports season. Continued safety measures due to the Covid-19 health crisis will also dictate the timelines with clearance through state health/safety decisions.

No athletic events at the CCC level have taken place since before mid-March when health concerns over Covid-19 shut down and ultimately canceled all 2020 Spring Sports and the state championship tournament for men's and women's basketball.

A proposal put together by a Covid-19 Working Group, including input from several coaches associations, athletic trainers, and athletic directors, was approved by the Board that contains different plans with condensed seasons and guidelines to return to competition. As part of the condensed seasons, only conference and regional playoffs championships would take place to cut down travel between Southern California and Northern California colleges.

Covid-19 Working Group Plan

Potentially, certain sports may switch from Fall to Spring. The earliest proposed start date for contests is slated for this September.

The South Coast Conference consists of Cerritos, Compton, East Los Angeles, El Camino, Long Beach City, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles Harbor, Los Angeles Southwest, Los Angeles Trade Tech, Mt. San Antonio, Pasadena City, and Rio Hondo Colleges. Chaffey is hosted in for aquatic sports only.
