SCC Commissioner's Message To Fall Student-Athletes

SCC Commissioner's Message To Fall Student-Athletes

With the South Coast Conference announcement to cancel the proposed fall 2020 season including men's and women's water polo, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, and women's volleyball, it is a somber time for us all in athletics. As commissioner of the SCC for more than 15 years, this was the toughest decision that the presidents and myself had to make.

From the outset of the pandemic back in March, the safety and welfare of our student-athletes was the driving force in all the decisions we have made. For those that don't understand why this decision was made, the alternative to go forward would in essence put our athletes, staff, officials and ultimately your own families at risk. The state of California in particular has been hit hard by the pandemic since Thanksgiving. On behalf of myself, all the college presidents, and our athletic directors, I assure you that we did everything possible to have competition, but spiking numbers in COVID-19 cases just would not allow this to happen.

I congratulate student-athletes who remain in fall zoom classes as I know the distance learning model is difficult. Our hope is that our conference's many dedicated head coaches can keep all of you involved through the spring and be ready for a full fall season of athletics in September, 2021.

Hopefully you will continue to concentrate on your academics in January with the next step to do conditioning for competition, and then get back to what we do--playing contests--in the near future,

Have a great Christmas, Hanukkah and Holiday Season.

Sincerely
Rich Kollen, Commissioner
South Coast Conference
