SCC Champ LBCC State Runner-up in Beach Volleyball

South Coast Conference champion Long Beach City College took home the state runner-up trophy at the CCCAA State Women's Beach Volleyball Team Championships, losing in the final to state champ Grossmont, 3-1, at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center May 9.

The Vikings defeated Irvine Valley, 4-1, and then knocked off Sierra, also by a 4-1 count during pool play to win Pool #1.  LBCC's No. 3 duo of Doris Woods and Isabella Alvarez, 2-time All-SCC selections, were the only Long Beach pair to win a match in each of three state playoff games.

El Camino went 1-1 in Pool #2, losing to Grossmont, 3-2, and downing Gavilan, 3-2. The Warriors, however, had to settle for officially finishing in a tie for 3rd place at state with Irvine Valley.

Long Beach finished in second place for the second time in the brief 5-year history of the sport, also taking second in 2017. The Vikings are directed by head coach Misty May-Treanor, a 3-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball as a player.

The El Camino pair of Phina Leilua and Kylee Glickman were the 2019 South Coast individual champions (see photo below, Leilua left/Glickman right).
