Desert Captures SCC Women's Tennis Crown
For only the second time as a hosted-in member, College of the Desert won the 2023 South Coast Conference women's tennis team title. The Roadrunners have been hosted into the SCC in several seasons going back to their last SCC crown in 2014.
Desert (8-1 overall) went undefeated at 7-0 in capturing the title in this year's 5-team conference.
Ironically, last year's SCC champ El Camino, the 2022 state champions, didn't field a team this year nor did 2018 SCC/state champ Cerritos. Mt. San Antonio (6-5), the 2015 conference/state champion, finished in second place with a 5-2 SCC mark. Rio Hondo (6-6) placed third at 3-4.
COD earned the #2 seed for this year's SoCal Dual Team Regional Playoffs and host #5 Glendale in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 11. (See regional bracket at link)
Desert is led by #1 singles player Hana Moss and #2 Emunah Daffon, an All-SCC First Team singles and doubles player a year ago. The pair make up the team's #1 doubles squad. The talented duo were undefeated in both singles and doubles team dual matches this season.
Mt. SAC was led this year by #1 player Jahday Drewery while Rio Hondo relied on the play of its #1 Nikki Lule.
Moss-Daffon won the conference doubles title, defeating the Mounties' pair of Drewery and Lara Rizkallah in the finals, 8-0, at the SCC Individual Championships held April 6-7 at Mt. San Antonio College.
In singles, Moss defeated Lule, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals while Daffon swept Drewery in the other semi, 6-1, 6-4.
UPDATE--On April 12, Moss defeated teammate Daffon 6-3, 7-5, to capture the SCC individual singles title. Daffon was a conference finalist in both of her seasons at COD.
