Long Beach Rule Of SCC Women's Water Polo Continues, 8 Consecutive Titles

Long Beach City College's dynasty in women's water polo kept going in 2023 as the Vikings extended both their South Coast Conference streak of championships to now eight and their SCC game-winning string to 73 at the SCC Championship Tournament held Nov. 3-4 at LBCC.

The Vikings outscored first round opponent El Camino, 23-1, then scored an easy 19-3 triumph over Mt. San Antonio in the championship game. 

Olivia Slavens scored five goals, and both Emily Molendyk and Katie Juarez added four goals each in the title win. Elizabeth Jung contributed two goals and two assists. Long Beach (18-10 overall) went 8-0 (6-0 in coasting to the SCC dual season title) and outscored conference opponents, 124-22, in seven games (one forfeit win). 

At last year's SCC tourney, LBCC pounded three conference opponents by a combined 68-4 count. Long Beach hasn't lost a conference match back since 2015. 

Long Beach is the #5 seed and the lone SCC team to advance to the Southern California Regional Championships Nov. 9-11 at Citrus College.  SoCal Championship Schedule

Second-place Mt. SAC reached the finals with a 10-7 semifinals win over Cerritos as the Mounties' Gianna Gomez, the team's leading scorer this year, was one of four players to score two goals. 

THIRD PLACE FINAL, EL CAMINO 10, CERRITOS 9: In sudden death OT, Jackie Calhoun's goal with 1:31 left in the third 5-minute extra period lifted the Warriors to third place at the tourney. Yani Camarador tallied four goals and Brooke Baudendistel added three scores. Jewels Longoria-Morasky, the conference's leading scorer this year, netted six goals for the Falcons. Longoria-Morasky had sent the game into overtime at 8-8 when she tied it with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
