Long Beach City College is an early leader in the SCC baseball race.

Four South Coast Conference teams have made it into the top 10 of this week's California Community College Baseball Coaches Asssociation (CCCBCA) Southern California Regional Poll.

Current first-place Long Beach City College occupies the #4 ranking, followed by surprising seventh-place Mt. San Antonio at #8 and second-place El Camino #9. Third-place Cerritos, in a comeback year, is rated #10. Rio Hondo, another team that is making a rebound from a dismal 2019, is the only other SCC team in the region Top 20 rankings as the tied for fifth-place Roadrunners are at #18. The CCCSIA State Top 20 Rankings will commence next week.

Long Beach was 7-0 in conference at the time of this release to hold a 1-game lead over El Camino as the two programs have picked up where they left off in last year's battle for the SCC South title that became a co-championship on the final day of the SCC season. The Vikings (16-3) have won eight straight games overall, helped by the SCC's current batting average leader in leftfielder Bryan Sanders (.400) and power-hitting pitcher Matthew Pinal, who slugged two homers, including a grand slam, while pitching a 7-inning, 1-hitter in a victory over Rio Hondo on Feb. 29. Pinal leads the conference in dingers with four and is 4-0 on the mound with a 2.33 ERA.

Mt. SAC (11-7) is a head-scratching 2-5 in SCC play after losing back-to-back series against El Camino and unranked Pasadena City (tied for fifth place). The Mounties started the season at 9-1, but have stumbled since. Leftfielder Cole Jordan has been a steady performer with a .323 average, a conference-leading nine doubles, and 18 RBI.

El Camino (12-6) is paced by conference pitcher of the year candidate in Jimmy Galicia, who is tied for the state lead in wins (five) and is in the top five in strikeouts with 46 in 48 innings (2.63 ERA).

Cerritos (11-7) recovered from being swept by El Camino, including two 1-run defeats, with a wild 6-5, 11-inning win over Pasadena on March 3. The Falcons rallied twice, first with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extra frames at 2-2, then after PCC took a 5-2 lead in the top of the 11th, Cerritos scored four in the bottom capped by centerfielder Buck Anderson's walk-off single with the bases loaded. Catcher Owen Beebe was batting .550 in six conference games (.326 overall).

Among individual leaders, conference MVP candidate Marco Martinez, Pasadena's third baseman, led the state in on-base percentage (.598) and walks (25) while his .397 batting average (second in SCC) and 19 RBI (tied for conference lead) are strong numbers for last year's All-American.
