Carr Named State October Athlete of the Month; National Soccer Player of Year

Carr Named State October Athlete of the Month; National Soccer Player of Year

Sophomore Sydney Carr became the fourth player from a South Coast Conference college in the last five selections for the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) State Women's Athlete of the Month award. Carr, a high-scoring forward from Cerritos College was picked for the month of October.

Carr, a transfer from UC Irvine, paced the nation's top-ranked Falcons all season. During the month of October, the Falcons went 8-0 with Carr scoring at least one goal in each of the team's eight games, for a total of 21 goals.

Not only did she create for herself, but she also got her teammates involved, notching at least one assist in six-of-eight games for a total of 10 assists. She twice had four-goal three-assist games, scored four hattricks, and three of those were four-goal performances. Carr led the state in scoring. By the end of October, she had scored a goal in an amazing 15 straight games.

Her streak was extended to 20 games before it ended along with the Falcons season when San Bernardino Valley beat the Falcons in penalty kicks after tying 1-1 in regulation and overtime during the third round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Cerritos did not advance to the CCCAA State Championships despite not losing a match all season (22-0-1).

Cerritos boasts the most State AOTMs in the history of the award, started in 2005. The Norwalk institution now has 22 winners of the state award, 12 women, which is the most for that gender. The most men is 11 by Fresno City College with Cerritos second in the gender with 10.

BREAKING NEWS NOTE:

Carr was recently named the National Player of the Year by United States Soccer for non-scholarship colleges. Originally from El Modena High, Carr signed to continue her playing/educational career at NCAA Division I Seattle University. She finished the season with 47 goals and 20 assists for 114 points.
