Several SCC Representatives Part Of State's Scholar-Athlete Awards
The South Coast Conference's El Camino and Long Beach City Colleges were recognized as part of the CCCAA Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2019-2020 sports season.
El Camino softball player Mina Nakawake, who earned the conference's prestigious Don MacKenzie Scholarship last year and earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom, and Long Beach men's track and field long jumper Rylan Gray (3.85 GPA) each made the state's Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll while the El Camino women's badminton team was named the state's Scholar Team for its respective sport.
In addition, the 3C4A, an association of California Community College counselors and advisors for athletics, named LBCC women's soccer player Kimberly Izarraras its Female Achievement Award winner. Izarraras, an All-SCC Second Team performer in 2019, maintains a 3.7 GPA as she is working towards an Associate of Arts degree in biological and physical sciences, both which are in progress for a spring, 2021 graduation. The award is according to the 3C4A "intended to honor student-athletes who have overcome great personal, academic and/or emotional odds to achieve success while participating in intercollegiate athletics."
On March 31, these student-athletes will be honored via an online ceremony at the annual CCCAA Convention.
Gray graduated this past spring with an AA degree for transfer in political science to UCLA. Minawake, a communications major, has transferred to Long Beach State University to continue her education only after performing as an All-SCC and All-SoCal centerfielder for the Warriors in 2019 and 2020.
