ELAC, LBCC Favorites In SCC Men's Basketball Race

State #3-ranked East Los Angeles College, riding a school-record 15-game winning streak, and #23-rated Long Beach City appear to be the favorites to win the South Coast Conference men's basketball titles as the North and South Division 8-game conference schedules begin tonight, January 22.

The Huskies (19-1 overall) ended the Vikings (13-5) 6-game win streak, 83-68, last week in a conference crossover. ELAC's competition in the North is slim considering state RPI has the Huskies at #8 and the next closest division opponent is LA Trade Tech (11-9) at 52nd.

Meanwhile, Long Beach will likely have its hands full in trying to stave off Cerritos (11-7), the state #28-ranked squad, for the South crown. The Falcons are on a 6-game win streak and happen to be #10 in state RPI. Cerritos went 4-0 thus far this month in SCC crossovers and has an impressive 57-51 loss to East LA back in mid-December. LBCC is 18th in RPI. Another team that could be difficult is LA Southwest, unranked and a modest #49 in RPI. The Cougars have won seven of their last nine contests to creep over the .500 mark at 9-8.

In state team stats, the SCC are in the mix among the leaders. Long Beach is #8 in scoring at 85.7 points a game followed closely by #12 ELAC at 84.6. Cerritos has the conference's top defense and state #6 at 63.3 points allowed. East LA is #2 and Long Beach #4 behind by percentage points in state field goal percentage accuracy at 50.1 percent marks. LA Southwest is #2 in blocks at 6.2 per contest while Pasadena City is #2 in steals average at 12.3 per game.

Individually, the Vikings' Jace Bass is the state scoring leader at 30.7 points a game, followed by LBCC teammate Kester Ofoegbu at #5 (21.9) and Trade Tech's Mark Chin #6 (21.6). Cerritos Jalen Washington is #6 in free throw shooting percentage at 90.2. Chin leads the state in free throws made (139) and Bass is #2 at 123. ELAC's Kealen Allen is #7 in state field goal percentage at 64.5 percent.

Pasadena's Patric Panoosi is tied for #8 in overall 3-point baskets with 57. PCC's London Benford is #4 in the state in steals average at 3.3. LA Southwest's David Iwowari is tied for #7 in state blocked shots average at 2.6 per contest. Ofoegbu is 10th in rebounding at 9.6 average.
