South Coast Conference Men's Basketball Standings

No sooner had Cerritos College been named to the #1 state men's basketball ranking this week that Netflix favorite sons--East Los Angeles College--figured it should make a case for itself. The #12 Huskies knocked off the Falcons, 82-67, on Thursday at the Riverside City College Tournament. The Falcons had opened the season at 7-0, but suffered their second straight defeat in the tourney after losing to host RCC, 68-58, on Wednesday.

East LA (5-2) and Cerritos (7-2) appear to be the teams to beat in the South Coast Conference in the 2022-23 season. ELAC is the 6-time defending champions of the SCC North Division while Cerritos has won four straight SCC South titles, the last three all shared championships.

The last time a North team won the title outright that wasn't East LA was Mt. San Antonio back in 2015. The last non-Cerritos shared title by a South team was Compton in 2017.

The Huskies have losses v. #2 Fullerton and currently unranked West Los Angeles, a team that advanced to the CCCAA State Tournament semifinals last season. The ELAC wins have come against #1 Cerritos, #7 San Bernardino Valley and #18 Ventura. In the win over Cerritos, JT Langston made a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Noel Scott netted 21 points. Jon Sanders has been the Huskies' leading scorer at a 13.7 points a game clip.

Cerritos has been paced by Panama import Jonathan Salazar, who is averaging 14.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest, and the coach's son as Falcons HC Russ May is directing Everett May, an All-State player in high school at Los Alamitos High, who is off to a good start this year in averaging 10.9 points.

Also ranked in the current State Top 30 from the SCC are #14 Los Angeles Harbor, #21 LA Southwest, and #24 Long Beach City--all three from the South Division. Not coincidentally, LASW has shared the last two SCC South titles while LBCC finished in a 3-way tie last year for the crown, also sharing with Cerritos back in 2019.

The Seahawks are 8-1 after defeating #23 Santiago Canyon, 77-72, on Wednesday after have a 7-game win streak snapped by #15 San Diego Miramar, 66-63, at the Palomar Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 27. LAHC features the state's current #5 scorer in Louis Walker, averaging 23.5 points and a state fourth best 13.3 rebounds a game.

The Cougars (5-3) have the state's top scorer in Koron Davis, who is scorching the net for a 27.5 points average while third in California in total free throws made (72 of 84, 85.7 percent). He dropped 42 points on #13 Sequoias in a 83-80 LASW win on Nov. 17.

The Vikings (7-3) busted out of a 3-game losing streak by winning their last five games, going 3-0 at the West LA Wild Wild Shootout Dec. 1-3. Bonard Johnson Jr is one of four Long Beach players averaging 14 or more points at 16.6 a contest.

All of a sudden, El Camino is also off to its best start since 2011-2012 with an 8-2 mark. The Warriors are led by Gabe Hubbard, averaging 16.8 points and 10.1 rebounds. Compton is the one South team that is struggling at 3-7 despite the strong play of James Baker-Dunlap, averaging 19.2 points per contest.

From the North Division, "MiraCosta North" or better known as Pasadena City College is coming off a 1-win season in 2021-22, but have a new head coach in Ryan Frazer, who led a Cinderella #21 seed MiraCosta team to the state tourney last season. With three starters and five other redshirts following Frazer from the '21-22 Mustangs, PCC is already 6-5 in the young season. The Lancers have a solid player in transfer Jonathan Tchengang, averaging 11.9 points and 7.6 rebounds (division high).

Mt. San Antonio is 4-5 and on a 3-game losing skid although Nick Hopkins (15.4 points average) is playing well while Rio Hondo is 4-8 with current divison scoring leader Myles Jones at 16.7 points a game. LA Trade Tech is trying to turn around a 2-8 start as Omari Ferguson leads the Beavers in scoring at 12.1 points per contest.
