(MONTEREY PARK) -- It came down to the final event and even the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, but Long Beach City College held on to defeat Mt. San Antonio by the closest of margins, 782-780, for the 2022 SCC men's swimming and diving title on Saturday. The SCC Swimming and Diving Championships took place at East Los Angeles College's Swim Stadium April 21-23.

LBCC clinched its first SCC crown since 2012 (co-champs with Chaffey that year) and ended a remarkable run of six consecutive titles by Mt. SAC (2014-2019).

Claudio Reveron helped set up the Vikings win by stunning many with his victory from lane #2 in the 200 butterfly in 2:00.78. Reveron beat top seed Logan Morales of Mt. SAC who took second in that race.

In the 400 relay, Mt. SAC led barely for most of the first 300 yards, but in the final leg, Long Beach's Sullivan Moore kicked on the afterburners with a 46.85 anchor split that allowed the Vikings to win the race and the title in 3:11.91. The Mounties placed second at 3:13.65.

Mt. San Antonio had won the four previous relay races at the meet before the LBCC upset.

LBCC won eight events overall, including two diving titles by Jacob Fransen and two victories each by Moore (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle) and Mazen Abouelela (200, 500 freestyle). Mt. SAC won nine events with Matthew Neoh scoring wins in the 100/200 backstroke.

Rio Hondo's Xander Dimitriadas set himself up as a state contender with state top 8 swims in winning three events while capturing the SCC Swimmer of the Year award.

FINAL STANDINGS: 1. Long Beach 782, 2. Mt. San Antonio 780, 3. El Camino 485, T4.-Cerritos, Rio Hondo 393, 6. Chaffey 53, 7. Pasadena 47.
