Double-Double Track and Field/Cross Country State Crowns For Mt. SAC in '22-23

COMPLETE STATE MEET RESULTS

South Coast Conference member Mt. San Antonio College monopolized the 2022-2023 sports season by capturing both the 3C2A men's and women's track and field state championships on Saturday to add to the double state titles in men's and women's cross country last fall.

The Mounties had won three of the four track/cross country champoinships in the 2021-22 season with San Diego Mesa keeping the Walnut campus from completing the rare 4-sport sweep by winning the men's cross country title.

But this year, Mt. SAC performed the feat in dominating fashion at the May 19-20 state meet held at Modesto Junior College.

The repeat double track/field titles saw the Mounties men led by men's track MVP Jonathan Zavala, winner of the 10,000 meters (31:28.11) on Friday and second in the 5,000 meters on Saturday. The Mt. SAC women had field MVP Ahnyx Bush also score 18 points, winning the triple jump (41 feet, 3.75 inches) on Friday and taking second in the long jump on Saturday.

The Mt. SAC men scored 175.5 points to finish ahead of San Diego Mesa (110). In the women's standings, Mt. SAC tallied 151.5 points to outdistance next closest competitor in SCC team champion Cerritos with 84 points.

State Meet Highlights

MEN: Mt. San Antonio grabbed gold in 4x100 meter relay in a state season-best 40.07 seconds with a team of Namir Hemphill, Jacob Williams, Jake Jensen, and anchor Kerry Smith

Williams closed strong to win the 100 meters in 10.33 while Jensen took the bronze medal in 10.48. Smith scored the 200 meters title in 21.37, defeating Jensen's 21.44.

The Mounties capped the state team crown with a stirring 3:11.85 to win the 4x400 relay, going wire-to-wire behind the quartet of Thomas Scofano (48.5 leg), Smith (48.5), Hemphill (47.5) and Nick Felix (47.3).

Ethan Amata won the pole vault with a national JC/CC season best of 17-0.3/4, beating teammate Jered Beasley (16-0).

Marcus Monroe landed the high jump title 6-8.75 to win on fewer misses over Shasta's Anthony Pigoni-Covington, who cleared the same final height.

WOMEN: Amari Weatherford took command of the 100 midway to win in 11.60, ahead of Rionna Wallace of Cerritos (11.73), then reached gold as well in the 200 in 23.84, beating Mt. SAC teammate Jaiden Hill (24.20).

Hill won the 400 meters in 55.05, and had the state's best time from earlier this season at 54.43.

Cerritos proved its worth, led by Jazzmine Davis scoring 4,704 points to win the heptathlon and snagging a gold in the 100 hurdles in 13.92 over Mt. SAC's Cyvanna Brown (13.79).

Davis' attempt to win a third gold was denied in the 400 hurdles as El Camino's Alyssa Matsuzaki raced to the silver with Davis settling for fifth.

A great anchor leg of 46.05 by Aryianna Faircloth carried Cerritos past Mt. SAC at the wire to win the 4x100 relay in 46.05. Mt. SAC placed second in 46.31.

Mounties' track and field/cross country head coaches Giovanni Lanaro and Jenna Bird were the architects of the four state title sweep.
