The races for the South Coast Conference North and South Divisions are heating up in women's basketball as they enter the home stretch of the SCC schedule.

In the South, unranked Cerritos upset state #8 El Camino, 78-63, on Wednesday and has created a tie for first place in the division as both now have 6-1 conference records. The Falcons snapped the Warriors 7-game win streak as the Rendon twin sisters, Jesenia and Serena, combined for 51 points. The teams split their division contests at 1-1. El Camino lost their first South Division game in two years, a 17-game win string broken.

In the North, #3 rated Los Angeles Trade Tech is on fire with a 6-game conference win streak, including their seventh 100-points or more game this season in a rout over Rio Hondo last night. The Beavers are paced by the Cheyenne Sharpshooter Club in Cheyenne McKinnie and Cheyenne Givens, who combined for 49 points against the Roadrunners. They are No. 4 and No. 5 in the state in scoring with nearly identical points averages as Givens is at 22.1 and McKinnie averaging 22 even.

Keeping pace with Trade Tech at the top of the North is #6 East Los Angeles, coming off a 62-59 comeback win over #14 Pasadena City. The Huskies trailed by 10 in the first quarter and by seven in the fourth period but rallied to send the hard-luck Lancers to their fifth loss in the last six games. With Trade Tech and ELAC tied at 6-1, all eyes are pointing to the conference finale when the two heavyweights meet at East LA. The Beavers won the first encounter, 71-57, on Feb. 6.

Also in the mix in third place is 5-2 and #12 ranked Mt. San Antonio, a team that handed Trade Tech its only loss in conference on Jan. 23. The Mounties face East LA on Feb. 15 in a key contest.

In looking at the current total RPI ratings, the SCC could garner many high SoCal playoff seeds. Currently, Trade Tech is No. 2, East LA No. 3, Pasadena No. 4, Mt. San Antonio No. 5, El Camino No. 7, Rio Hondo No. 10, and Cerritos No. 16.

Trade Tech is fourth in the state in scoring at 83.4 points per game. Pasadena is third in state defense at 52.5 points allowed per game.

Individually, PCC's Dariel Johnson is No. 2 in rebounding at 15.2 boards collected and also second in the state in blocked shots at a 4.3 average. LA Southwest's Mercedes Ofoegbu is third in rebounding with a 14.9 clip.
