Mt. San Antonio College has a few hurdles to get to its goal, but the state #2-ranked Mounties figure to be in the thick of things come 3C2A State Tournament time in March as the premier team in South Coast Conference women's basketball in 2024-25.

After missing out on the tourney last year with an upset playoff loss to SCC South champion Long Beach City in the SoCal Regional Playoffs, Mt. SAC is off to a 10-3 start this season. Mt. SAC suffered two last-second losses to state #1 and undefeated College of the Sequoias and then recently got knocked off by #11 Cypress, 44-42, losing that one on a basket by the Chargers with 17 seconds left.

However, the Mounties have a resume of strong wins in defeating #3 and 2-time defending state champ and current #3 Orange Coast, #4 Laney, #5 Moorpark, twice v. #10 San Diego Mesa, and #15 CC San Francisco.

Mt. SAC brings back last year's SoCal Region and SCC North Division Player of the Year in Daisia Mitchell, who is averaging 14.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.8 steals thus far this season. Taliyah McFerson is another key performer at 13.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest.

The Mounties would be playing in front of the home fans too if they do reach the tourney as Mt. SAC is again the host of the 3C2A Championship.

Meanwhile, the rest of the SCC North Division starts with LA Trade-Tech (6-7) as the Beavers have the state's second-leading scorer in Serenity Johnson, averaging 26.2 points. Rio Hondo (6-8) is having an improved season after winning just four games a season ago. The Roudrunners are paced by Alexia Valencia at 12.6 points a game.

East Los Angeles (3-7) went through an uncharacteristic 6-game losing streak before breaking it with a 60-57 win over West Los Angeles. Asiah Harris leads the Huskies at 15.7 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Pasadena City (2-8) also suffered a surprising 8-game losing streak, the longest going back 30 years, but the Lancers, playing without two injured top players, rebounded on Saturday with a 48-47 triumph over San Bernardino Valley. Monica Menzies is averaging a Lancers-leading 18.2 points.

Long Beach (8-5) again appears to be at the front of the class in the SCC South with returning Division Player of the Year in Brillana Boyd, who is playing outstanding again at 20.7 points and 9.2 boards. Cerritos (3-7) is led by Lauryn Nakamura, sporting a 10-point game average.

It's been a rough go thus far for the other three South teams as Compton (1-9), El Camino (0-9) and LA Harbor (0-10) are looking to improve. Compton is led by Shammarah Jones at 18.6 points per game, the Warriors are paced by Bella Blum at 16.8 points, and the Seahawks have a strong player in the post in Daniesha Oliver, who is fifth in the state in rebounding at 13 boards average.

On January 22 of the new year, the 8-game, SCC division schedules begin that determine the conference champions.
