Three SCC Squads on State Women's Soccer Top 10 Ratings
The strength of women's soccer in the South Coast Conference this season is evident already with three teams making this week's first CCCSIA State Top 20 Rankings in #5 Long Beach City College, #6 El Camino and #10 Mt. San Antonio.
SOUTH DIVISION
The Warriors (5-0) are off to a flying start with a 5-game winning streak and have a high scorer in returning All Second Team selection Allison Sibley, who has 11 goals, second in the state. She has scored in every game, including back-to-back hat tricks v. Santa Monica and San Diego City.
Long Beach (4-0) also was perfect (games played through Sept. 14) and have been rolling over opponents, outscoring them 23-2. The Vikings return All-SCC First Team choice Genesis Lopez, who has seven goals, two each in recent victories over San Diego Mesa, Southwestern, and Canyons.
Los Angeles Harbor (2-2-2) is paced by All-SCC Second Teamer Yamna Areola, who scored key goals in wins over Irvine Valley and LA Valley.
Compton (1-2-1) scored a 2-1 win over West LA with a game-winning score by Yarely Marquez.
Cerritos (0-3) is looking for its first win of '23 but have a solid goalie in SCC Co-Goalie of the Year Victoria Ruiz, who made 15 saves in a loss to Sierra.
NORTH DIVISION
Mt. San Antonio (4-1-1) ran off three straight wins before being held down by Cosumnes River (1-0 loss) and tying Sierra (0-0), but came right back to beat Cypress, 3-1. Natalia Reyes leads the Mounties with five goals.
Rio Hondo (3-0-2) is ranked #18 in the state poll, and figure to challenge for the division title. The Roadrunners just tied #16 Ventura, 2-2, and like to keep the score down in games, outscoring their opponents just 8-4 in five contests. Janessa Gallardo, who had two goals in a win over San Francisco, appears to be a top performer.
Unranked Pasadena City (4-0-2) is undefeated after six games and has perhaps its strongest team in several years. The Lancers have outscored others, 14-2. High-scoring All-SCC Second Teamer Megan Schmidt notched three goals so far.
East Los Angeles (1-1) has played only two matches, but got a 2-goal performance from Abigail Ruiz in a 2-1 win over West LA.
Los Angeles City (0-5) is still looking for its first goal and have a mostly freshman roster while have a returning player in Kelly Flores-Coto.
The 9-game, SCC round-robin schedule begins for all teams in October. The division titles and an automatic playoff spot is insured with the most points earned (three for a victory, one for a tie) despite only playing once v. all teams and only four games v. its own division opponents.
The squads then participate in the annual SCC Tournament at the start of November with the team winning earning the highest seed of conference squads for the postseason.
