Long Beach, Pasadena Early Favorites In SCC Women's Soccer

Long Beach City College, the state's current #3-ranked team in the CCCSIA Top 20, and Pasadena City at #10 have stood out as potential favorites for the respective South Coast Conference women's soccer division titles in 2025.

The Vikings are 8-1 overall and No. 3 in the all-important regional power points ratings at 2.38.

The 3-time defending SCC South Division champion, LBCC has a win over #1 ranked Saddleback, 2-1, on Sept. 23, along with wins over #11 Canada (fourth in North power points) and #20 Orange Coast (sixth in South power points). It's only loss was against #12 Chaffey and the squad has outscored opponents, 31-6, after nine games.

Long Beach's Lorena Moreno, the SCC South Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman, leads the conference in goals with 10 (she had 11 all last year) and is tied for first in points with 23. The Vikings also return three All-SCC players in midfielders Leila Alfadheil, Bryanna Duarte and defender Charlotte Grace.

In the North Division, Pasadena (6-4 overall) is coming of the program's best season in school history last year under SoCal Region Coach of the Year Terryn Soelberg. While the Lancers won the SCC Tournament title a year ago, they have never won a division championship and have their sights on accomplishing that feat this season.

PCC scored a big win over Chaffey, 4-1, on Sept. 19 and have losses v. Saddleback (1-0), state #T13 Santa Barbara CC, #20 Orange Coast while getting upset v. unranked Desert, 1-0. The Lancers are No. 8 in the SoCal power points. A top returning player is defender Rachel Mentaze and among PCC's newcomers forward Isabella Nersesyan is a standout with a goal and five assists.

Once again, another SCC North top squad is currently unranked Mt. San Antonio (4-2-3), the 3-time defending division champion. The Mounties have a tie v. state #15 Hartnell and have close 2-1 losses v. both v. #7 Cypress and Santa Barbara. Returning All-SCC scorer Eden Ramirez is off to a strong start with seven goals and three assists.

The SCC North is down to just four teams this season with Rio Hondo, a winner of four division titles between 2016-2021, unfortunately unable to field a team. The other teams in the division are East Los Angeles (4-6-1), featuring high-scoring midfielder Jennifer Gallardo, who is tied with Moreno for SCC points on eight goals and seven assists, and Los Angeles City (2-4-2) brings back two All-SCC First Teamers including Tania Leal

In the SCC South, Compton is a competitive 4-2-1 behind goalie Chloe Cordero, who has an .833 save percentage. Other South squads are El Camino, led by '24 All-SCC First Teamer Julia Camacho, Cerritos, paced by returning All-SCC First Team defender Jenna Santos, and LA Harbor, who have a solid All-SCC returning defender in Alexia Leon.

The 8-game, SCC schedule begins next week and the SCC Tournament will feature the championship game on Nov. 13 hosted by Rio Hondo College.
