Long Beach Captures First Women's Swim Title In 16 Years

(MONTEREY PARK)--Behind six event wins by South Coast Conference Co-Swimmers of the Year in Atiya Yuwana and Kaya Barrett, Long Beach City College captured its first SCC women's swimming and diving championship since 2006 on Saturday. The Vikings participated in the SCC Championships at East Los Angeles College's Swim Stadium April 21-23. 

FINAL STANDINGS: 1. Long Beach 725, 2. Mt. San Antonio 663, 3. Cerritos 461, 4. El Camino 331, 5. Rio Hondo 249.5, 6. East Los Angeles 158.5, 7. Pasadena 147, 8. Chaffey 127.

The Vikings won eight events overall, including the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Long Beach snapped Mt. San Antonio's streak of four straight SCC titles (2016-2019) in the first competed swim title in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mt. SAC also won eight events, led by victories in three relays--the 200 and 400 medley and the 800 freestyle and two diving titles by Journey Baretto. 

Pasadena City's Nickey Hale scored wins in the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley while Chaffey's Jaylynn Rodriguez picked up first place in both the 100 and 200 butterfly.
