Harbor Edges Mt. SAC For 3rd Straight SCC Women's Cross Country TItle

Los Angeles Harbor College placed three of the top four racers and needed that type of high finish to just edge out Mt. San Antonio, 35-36, for the 2019 South Coast Conference Women's Cross Country Championship Friday at the SCC finals meet held Friday at Irvine Regional Park. It was the Seahawks third consecutive conference title, which includes a shared title with the Mounties back in 2017.
Also for the third straight year, a Harbor runner won the individual title over the 5-kilometer course as freshman Marai Atanacio captured the individual SCC title with a 21:24.3 time. Mt. SAC sophomore Sadie Encinas placed second in 21:39.2 as the pair were the only runners to break the 22-minute mark. The rest of the top five were in order: Harbor's Angie Fajardo in third (22:12.9) and Linnssy Munoz (22:14) in fourth and Pasadena City's Olivia Ruiz in fifth (22:22.9). For Ruiz, it was PCC's first All-SCC First Team finish in three years and just the third by a Lancers runner in the past 10 seasons.
Long Beach City, paced by Dasani Zavala in 11th (23:00), finished third as a team while Pasadena placed fourth. It was the Vikings best finish in 11 years (third in 2008) and PCC's best team mark since 2013 (also fourth). Fifty-two runners from eight colleges participated in the annual conference meet.
State #6-ranked Mt. SAC and #7 LA Harbor along with other qualifying conference teams and individuals will participate in the Southern California Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 8, at Mission Park in San Diego.
